How to Grow Professionally in a Tech Scale-Up Company

I grew up in Indonesia, far away from The Netherlands, and I have always known the world was much bigger than I could imagine. So I decided to explore it, in order to feed my curiosity. This is the story of how I moved from my hometown to The Netherlands and ended up working in a fast-growing technology scale-up.

My evolving interest in HR

One of the things that makes me tick is observing and understanding human behaviour in social environments, be it formal (business) or informal. This eventually brought me to the domain of social and organisational psychology.

Upon completion of my Psychology bachelor’s in Australia, I decided to take on another challenge abroad by moving to the other side of the world, the Netherlands, to complete a Master in Social & Organisational Psychology at Leiden University. During my studies, I became more and more interested in the business aspect of psychology and I started to act upon that interest.

Given my psychology background, I’ve always enjoyed interacting with people. So, I started looking to develop myself in the field of human resources. Having done several internships in different areas - including social science research, counselling and HR - I must say I love HR the most, due to its capacity to drive strategic business decisions.

Why Dashmote?

I stumbled upon Dashmote’s internship opportunities on a job listing platform. This was back in 2018, while I was looking for a challenging internship in the field of human resources. Dashmote appealed to me because, being a start-up, it had a smaller workforce, which meant that I could work one-on-one with the company’s decision makers.

Dashmote also appealed to me because it was a tech start-up and I previously had an incredible experience working as HR Intern at a tech unicorn based in Indonesia. This is especially considering that we live in the midst of a digital revolution, where automation has taken over a lot of human activities. To be a part of that advancement, I felt, would be an amazing opportunity.

To my surprise, Dashmote’s job listing matched my future aspirations and love for HR and tech. Convinced that there was a match between Dashmote and I, I hit ‘Apply.’ And soon enough, I found out I was right, and that’s how my Dashmote journey began!

How is it to work in a fast-growing tech scale-up?

It may sound like an exaggeration (although it’s not!), but Dashmote is really the ideal workplace. I love the fact that back then, even though I was a student who lacked significant recruitment experience, the staff trusted me and gave me many opportunities to grow.

After only a short period of time, I became responsible for performing the end-to-end recruitment activities for various roles ranging from tech to the non-tech field. Dasmote allowed me to grow as a professional as well. Recruiting for some unconventional roles, for instance Data Scientist, was a first for me. Not only have I gained more experience in terms of recruitment processes, I also got to understand how the full cycle of data science projects works and are often being involved in exciting tech networking events.

In regards to the Dashmote team, we are a fast-growing team with talented people from all over the world. With the goal of bridging the gap between images and data, we are working to bring AI-based solutions to marketers for clients like Heineken, Unilever, Philips, L’Oreal, and Coca-Cola. Doing so on a global level, our company today has offices in Amsterdam, Shanghai, Vienna, and New York. This allows me to learn something new from my colleagues every single day. Not to mention that the team regularly participates in team events like karaoke, a trip to Amsterdam Dungeon, and some very fun workshops!

How to grow together?

Last but not least, the best part about working for Dashmote is that the company offers me lots of opportunities for progressing my career. My internship contract had ended in January, but I was given the opportunity to continue my career here as a full-time Junior HR/Recruiter. I enjoy working here as the company's hierarchy is very horizontal, so I get to work closely with the key stakeholders.

The extent to which you’re able to enjoy the freedom and responsibility to make an impact - whilst being one of the ‘newest’ faces within the company - is what I like the most about it.
